John the Baptist

The prophet who preached repentance in the wilderness of Judea and baptized in the Jordan River before the coming of Jesus. He wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt. He ate locusts and wild honey. (Matthew 3:1-6)

Isaiah prophesied him. "A voice cries: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God." (Isaiah 40:3, Matthew 3:3)

He baptizes with water for repentance, but Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in hid hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn, but the chaff will burn with unquenchable fire. (Matthew 3:7-12)

Jesus came from Galilee to be baptized in the Jordan, insisting that John should baptize Him. When it happened, Jesus went up from the water, and the heavens opened to Him. He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. A voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:13-17)

When John the Baptist was arrested, Jesus withdrew to Galilee and from then on preached to repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matthew 5:12-17)
